Better Search Engine Placement

Get Search Traffic

I

n order to generate search engine traffic you have to have content. This is quality free information on topics related to what you sell. Also, other sites will want a reason to link to you and content is often the most popular attraction.

For example on this site I’m giving information away about web site promotion. You may find that just by sitting down and writing an honest informative article or two, the keywords you target and supportive phrases will be in the body text.

As we will see, frequency and placement of keywords, and good content backed up with a healthy link program, will generate traffic.

One thing to be careful of however is that the search engines are very literal in their interpretation of keywords. The plural form of a word will not be assigned the same weight to the singular. Similarly, words like website or web site are treated individually. Both forms need to be included in the text, with an emphasis on the word(s) that ranked highly with little competition.

The most respected site for up to date information on search engine optimisation is www.searchenginewatch.com, they offer some free information then you subscribe to get more detailed analysis and news.

I susbscribe to this site on and off. There is so much to read that you can lose your focus. So I tend to read in themes, adjust my thinking to the new wisdom and move on. You'll need to come back and read more on a regular basis because this industry moves on so fast.

Today's hot technique can quickly become redundant. Thats why concentrating on content rather than "tricks" is the safest way of proceeding.

However if you take out a minimum (6 month) subscription every two years say, and download the pages (you paid for them, might as well keep them!) using something like Grab-a-site, you'll be paying around £35 per year and have a library of information on all the major search engines. Surely everyone can afford that.

clickZ is a network of writers on the search engine industry and is a partner of search engine watch. The content is free and there are a wealth of newsletters you can subscribe to.

If your budget is higher there is an e-book on inside information on Google available from InfoNortics. It costs £150, and it was written late 2005 - have a glance at the chapters to see what it covers - there is a sample chapter too.

I bought the book, its a unique guide on the possible future of Google (helping you think about how to position your business), as well as an insight to Pagerank, Googles method for determining how well linked (and therefore relevant) your site is.
